The "Why Me?" Moment: Dealing with Suffering

There is a dangerous "fine print" that people sometimes forget to mention when you start your faith journey: Becoming a Christian does not grant you immunity from the world.
In fact, one of the biggest shocks for a new believer is when something goes wrong shortly after their "big change." You lose a contract at work, a family member gets sick, or you face a sudden financial setback. The immediate thought is often: "Wait a minute—I thought I was on God's side now? If He loves me, why is this happening?"
The "Insurance Policy" Myth
Many of us subconsciously treat faith like an insurance policy. We think that if we pay our "premiums" (prayer, church, being a good person), God is obligated to keep the storms away from our house. But Jesus was very honest with His followers. He didn't promise a life without storms; He promised a foundation that can survive them.
In John 16:33, Jesus says, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." Notice He didn't say "you might have trouble." He said it’s a guarantee. Faith isn't a bubble that keeps the world out; it’s an anchor that keeps you from being swept away when the tide rises.
The Purpose in the Pain
In the world of project management, we know that pressure tests are necessary to find the breaking points of a structure. In the same way, the hard seasons of life often reveal the strength of our faith. It’s easy to trust God when the sun is shining and the bank account is full. It’s in the "Why Me?" moments that we learn what we truly believe.
When you go through a trial, God isn't "punishing" you or "ignoring" you. He is often using that very situation to build a level of resilience and character in you that couldn't be formed in the "easy" times.
Practical Step: The "Gratitude and Grit" Journal
When life gets hard, our brains naturally zoom in on the problem until we lose sight of everything else. To combat this, we’re going to practice "Reframing" this week.
The "Grit" List: On one side of a piece of paper, write down the hardest thing you are facing right now. Be honest. Tell God exactly why it frustrates you or scares you.
The "Gratitude" List: On the other side, list three things that are still true, regardless of the problem. (e.g., "God still loves me," "I have a roof over my head," "I am not facing this alone.")
The Bridge Prayer: Every morning this week, pray this simple 15-second prayer: "Lord, I don't like this situation, but I trust that You are in it with me. Give me the grit to get through today and the eyes to see Your goodness in the middle of it."
Look for the "Small Wins": At the end of the day, find one tiny way God provided for you—a kind text from a friend, a green light when you were late, or just the strength to keep your cool.
