Welcome to the Family: A Beginner’s Guide to Reading the Bible

Congratulations! Whether you’ve recently said "yes" to following Jesus or you’re simply curious about what Christianity is all about, you’ve taken an incredible first step.

The most powerful way to get to know God is by reading His Word. However, we know that picking up the Bible can feel a bit like walking into a massive library—it’s a large collection of books written thousands of years ago, and it can feel a little intimidating at first.

If you’re wondering where to start, here are four practical tips to help you dive in.

1. Find a Version That Speaks Your Language

The Bible was originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Because of this, there are many different English translations. Some, like the King James Version (KJV), use beautiful but older language. Others, like the New Living Translation (NLT) or the New International Version (NIV), use modern language that is easier to grasp.

Don’t be afraid to explore! Most Bible apps allow you to switch between versions with a single click. If a verse feels confusing in one version, try reading it in another. The goal isn’t to struggle with the vocabulary; it’s to understand the heart of the message.

"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

2. Consistency is Key (The Spiritual Workout)

Think of reading the Bible like physical exercise. At first, you might dread getting started. But as you stay consistent, your "spiritual muscles" grow. Eventually, your soul begins to crave it.

Just as exercise changes your body and boosts your confidence, reading the Word changes your internal world. The Holy Spirit uses the Bible to nourish your soul and provide a "rebirth" of your perspective. You’ll find that God begins to speak directly to your current situation through ancient texts.

3. Pray Before You Turn the Page

This is a step many people overlook, but it’s the most important. The Bible was written by people inspired by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the best way to understand it is to ask the Author for help!

Before you read, say a simple prayer: "Lord, please open my eyes to what You want me to see today." Think of the Holy Spirit as your personal tutor. When you ask for wisdom, He is faithful to give it.

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."Matthew 7:7 (NIV)

4. Be a Doer, Not Just a Reader

In any subject, true learning happens when you apply what you've studied. The Bible isn't just a book of facts to memorize; it’s a manual for living. Real, everlasting change occurs when you take a truth you’ve read and put it into practice in your daily life.

Applying the Word is how we demonstrate our faith. It shows God that we trust Him enough to obey Him. It might feel like an effort at first, but the more you walk in obedience, the more you will see God’s power moving in your life.

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."James 1:22 (NIV)

You don't have to understand everything today. Just start where you are, stay consistent, and watch how God transforms your life through His Word.
