Finding Meaning and Overcoming Emptiness as a New Believer
Life's most challenging seasons often bring our deepest questions to the surface. Perhaps you've faced a significant setback – a job loss like my friend, a broken relationship, or a dream unfulfilled. In those moments, it’s natural to feel your world imploding, leading to a profound sense of hopelessness. You might ask, "What’s the point? What’s the purpose? Why am I here?"
This isn't just a fleeting thought; it’s a question humanity has wrestled with for millennia. Experts, from philosophers to scientists, have sought answers, yet often fall short of true fulfillment. I, too, have personally grappled with this profound question during one of the darkest periods of my life, much like my friend.
This universal query isn't surprising. Deep within each of us lies an innate yearning for a higher purpose in life. It's why books like Rick Warren's "The Purpose Driven Life" ("What on Earth Am I Here For?") have sold over 40 million copies worldwide and been translated into hundreds of languages. The reason for such massive appeal is simple: deep inside, many of us feel incomplete. We sense a profound spiritual void that cannot be filled by human endeavors.
Many of us have tried to fill this emptiness, often without lasting success. These attempts can manifest in relentless pursuits of:
Careers and professional success (always chasing the next promotion or salary bump)
Relationships (hoping another person will complete us)
Material possessions (cars, homes, designer clothes, jewelry – believing more 'stuff' equals more happiness)
Fleeting pleasures (such as entertainment, travel, or in more desperate cases, even drugs and alcohol)
As the ancient wise King Solomon lamented in Ecclesiastes 2:10-11: "I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward of my labor. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun." His conclusion? Everything outside of God was meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
We Were Created for a Relationship with God
The deep yearning you feel inside is your spirit’s desire to connect with its Source. Our Heavenly Father, God, deposited a spirit inside each and every one of us. Picture that spirit as a dim, flickering light at the center of your being. This light flashes brighter and brighter as you draw closer to your Creator. Like a homing device that beeps faster as you approach your destination, your inner light illuminates, beginning to fill that profound void in your heart.
The fundamental truth is this: You were created to be in a relationship with your Father in Heaven. This might sound unusual or even "weird" if you're a non-believer or new to Christianity. Perhaps you're unfamiliar with the concept of a personal God. But the truth remains: there is a God, and the reason many of us feel incomplete is precisely because we haven't taken the time to build a genuine relationship with Him.
As Acts 17:28 (NIV) powerfully states, "‘For in him we live and move and have our being’; as some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’" This verse reveals that your very existence is intertwined with God. You are His creation, His offspring, designed for connection.
We were created in the image of God, encompassing not just our physical body and mind, but also our spiritual capacity for relationship. And that which He created, your Father in Heaven wholeheartedly supports. From the very beginning, He designed us and provided an environment for us to thrive. While we may find ourselves in challenging situations at times, He knows them and is here to support us. It is only through Him that we can lead truly loving and fulfilling lives – lives imbued with divine purpose and meaning.
Your Next Step: Turning Towards Your Creator
Finding your true purpose in God doesn't require a huge, overwhelming step or sacrifice. The Father who made you knows you already – every thought, every desire, every struggle. All you have to do is turn towards Him with a willing heart and begin to get to know Him. He will take care of the rest.
Practical Steps to Begin Your Journey of Purpose:
Acknowledge the Void: Be honest about the emptiness you feel and the ways you've tried to fill it.
Open Your Heart: Even if you're skeptical, simply open your heart to the possibility that God is real and desires a relationship with you.
Pray (Just Talk): Start talking to God. You don't need fancy words. Tell Him what you're feeling, your questions, your hopes. He listens.
Explore the Bible: The Bible is God's love letter to you. Start with the book of John in the New Testament to understand Jesus' life and purpose. Find a beginner's guide to reading the the Bible.
Seek Community: Find a welcoming Christian community or a trusted believer who can walk with you on this journey and answer your questions. This is crucial for faith development.
Final Thoughts: Your Purpose Awaits
You are here for a reason, and that reason is far greater than any earthly achievement or possession. You were created for relationship with a loving God, and in that relationship, you will discover your true divine purpose. Don't let your current struggles overshadow the profound truth of why you exist. Your meaning in life is found in Him.
